If when you think of Costa Rica you think of volcanoes, beaches, mountains, rivers and waterfalls, the Turrialba region is your ideal destination. We will tell you why.
The city of Turrialba is located in a valley fed by tributaries of the Reventazón River and on the slopes of the Turrialba Volcano. It is a fertile area for the cultivation of coffee, cocoa and sugar cane. Its fields are also used for raising cows and producing cheese, even with a designation of origin.
The geological conditions allowed the formation of waterfalls and a large number of rivers. This is why we have classified Turrialba as a canyon sanctuary in Costa Rica.

In pre-Columbian times, the indigenous population called it Turiraba (derived from turiri meaning fire and aba meaning river). In fact, the Guayabo National Monument currently houses the main archaeological finds of Costa Rica, civil and religious elements of this native population.
The urban development of Turrialba began with the completion of the Atlantic Railway at the end of the 19th century, which connected the central region of Cartago with the Caribbean region of Limón. For the 2022 census, the total population of Turrialba was approximately 80,000 inhabitants and in August 2023 the new facilities of the Turrialba Hospital were inaugurated.
There are also higher education institutions such as the Atlantic Regional Headquarters of the University of Costa Rica and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE), both with campuses open to the public of great natural beauty.
Due to its strategic location, 2 hours away by car from the Caribbean beaches of Limón and the capital San José, and 3 hours by car from the Juan Santa María International Airport, Turrialba is the ideal hub for your vacation.
This region offers sports activities such as rafting, hiking, MTB cycling routes, paragliding and canyoning; as well as cultural activities (visits to the Omar Salazar Obando Regional Museum and the Guayabo National Monument, bird watching and guided tours of coffee farms and dairy farms).
